In the opening of Agent Carter, nonsimultaneous sound is occurring while Peggy and Captain are talking allowing the audience insight to previous events. This is followed by a sound bridge that opens into an overview of part of New York. Peggy and Agent Flynn then have a conversation onscreen which allows the audience to see that she is not being taken seriously and instead is seen in the eyes of her male counterparts as more of a secretary. The next major scene for sound occurs when the buzzer gets set off offscreen, giving Peggy a chance to show her abilities. The dialog between Peggy and the guards reinforces that most see her as unable to defend herself, referring to her as sweetheart and such. This is followed by offscreen sound cutting back and forth from inside the warehouse where the guy behind the desk is paying no attention to outside where Peggy finally shows what she is capable of. Fast paced nondiegetic sound is added into the outside fight scene, only to be paralleled by the upbeat sound occurring inside the warehouse
The setting is mainly an office in New York, where Peggy is the only female in the room. It is clear that she is seen as incapable and overlooked by her coworkers. The approximate decade is the 50’s which can be seen through the costume, cars, and technology in place during that time. Rear projection is used when Peggy goes to confront the suspect in what appears to be a warehouse, giving the audience the feeling that they are in the location with her. The lighting is dimmed when Peggy goes to approach the criminals, focused on mainly Peggy throughout the scene.
An establishing shot is used to set the scene right after the previous opening scene closes with Peggy unable to speak to Steve as his plane crashed. The establishing shot showcases 1950’s New York and builds off of this to provide the audience with a little bit of context. Following this is a Dolly shot, panning over everyone in the office and then cutting away into a tighter shot only showing actors from the waist up. This setting is important, as later on in the clip this office will be where Peggy gets the phone call giving her a chance. Close shots are then used while Peggy and Agent Flynn are discussing how Peggy is doing. This scene ends with Flynn pretty much stating Peggy is unneeded in the field and belongs behind the desk where she will not get hurt. This shows the audience that her own boss doesn;t respect or believe in her, contradicting her every chance he gets. This also helps the audience understand the time frame this film was set in as women at the time were viewed as weak and incapable of more demanding jobs. The next important scene occurs when Peggy arrives at the warehouse, cutting from her fighting two guardsmen outside to a man paying no attention, yawning inside.
